Two pictures of noctilucent cloud, taken about an hour after true local midnight looking due North.

Noctilucent cloud is thought to be caused by the refraction of sunlight from very high (approx 80km) water droplets/ice particles. The sun is generally between 6 and 18 degrees below the horizon. At the time these pictures where taken the sun was about 12° below the horizon.
